Steve Forbes Keynotes Titans Breakfast

Steve Forbes

This morning at the National Conference Center at Lansdowne, Steve Forbes, Chairman and CEO of Forbes Media and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine, spoke to a packed house at the first Titans event of the 2009-2010 season.

Steve Knapp, The George Washington University; Steve Davis, Fairfax County Economic Development Authority Commission; Steve Forbes; and Alan Merten, George Mason University.

More than 580 attendees gathered to hear Forbes speak. Bobbie Kilberg, NVTC President & CEO, kicked off the event by thanking the team at Forbes magazine for their hard work and exceptional collaboration on our recent NVTC special Northern Virginia business section in the August 24 issue.

Brad Antle, Salient Solutions, and Steve Forbes.

NVTC Board Vice Chair Brad Antle, of Salient Solutions, emceed the event and Forbes was introduced by Linda Abraham, Chief Marketing Officer of comScore, which is a premier platinum Titans sponsor.

Steve Forbes with Linda Abraham, comScore.

Starting off on a comedic note, Forbes joked that the dismal state of the economy inspired him to speak so he could get a free breakfast. After the laughter subsided, he quickly focused on more serious matters. Despite his claim that financial policy can be "the most boring topic in the world," suitable for scaring away bad dates and unpleasant airline seatmates, Forbes managed to make it compelling and engaging. He talked about how the economy got to its current condition through a "perfect storm" of events: the Federal Reserve's policy of printing too much money, "mark-to-market" accounting rules for financial institutions, sub-prime loans, and excesses in the financial system. Forbes said that the economy is beginning to work again for larger companies and for the securitization market, but not yet sufficiently for consumers and small- to mid-sized businesses. He moved on to discuss what he sees as the solution to the economic crisis—urging President Obama's administration to focus immediately on having a credible policy of a strong, stable dollar. Citing the commitment of President Clinton's administration to that position, he made it clear that he does not consider this to be a partisan issue. In discussing the current issues of taxes, healthcare, and cap-and-trade, Forbes cited the need to create incentives for healthcare providers to bring their costs down and their quality up as an essential part of an economic recovery.

Bobbie Kilberg, President & CEO of NVTC, and Steve Forbes.

The morning ended with a question-and-answer session in which Forbes addressed his predictions for the near future, and detailed his ideas on how to kick economic recovery into full gear—likening the situation to that of the early '80s when the U.S. saw an unprecedented level of growth and innovation, and recommending a return to a "Hamiltonian system" which focuses on strengthening the dollar worldwide.

Virginia Secretary of Technology Len Pomata and Gary Shapiro, Consumer Electronics Association.

Forbes concluded by affirming that the country is on the verge of a new era of innovation, with Northern Virginia at the forefront.

NVTC was very pleased to have some of Virginia's future business leaders in the audience today. In addition to students from GWU, Northern Virginia Community College and Virginia Tech, we were also joined by 20 students from 10 different Loudoun County high schools. Faculty from these universities and high schools were in attendance as well.

Carolyn Parent, Deltek, Chris Metaxas, LexisNexis, and Nancy McCarthy, DC Rainmakers.

Our next Titans event is coming up in December, featuring Stefan Jacoby of Volkswagen America—so be sure to sign up early!
